LMU Medical Center Munich among the world's 20 best hospitals

Compared to the previous year, this represents an improvement of six places and confirms its leading position in Bavaria.

Since 2019, the US magazine Newsweek and the data portal Statista have examined 2,500 hospitals in 32 different countries for the eighth time and compiled a ranking of the best clinics.

In 2026, LMU Hospital improved its ranking by six places compared to the previous year, coming in at 17th place worldwide and thus entering the top 20 of the Newsweek rankings for the first time. This puts it in a leading international group headed by the Mayo Clinic, Toronto General Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Europaweit liegt das LMU Klinikum auf Platz 7, deutschlandweit liegt es mit der Charité und dem Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg in der Spitzengruppe. "Wenn man bereits als bestes Klinikum in München und Bayern bewertet wurde, ist es nicht leicht, die Qualität noch weiter zu verbessern. Genau darum bemühen wir uns aber jeden Tag", sagt Prof. Markus M. Lerch, der Vorstandsvorsitzende des LMU Klinikums.

Die Newsweek-Erhebung zu den „World's Best Hospitals 2026“ basiert auf vier verschiedenen Datenquellen: den Empfehlungen durch Experten aus der Gesundheitsbranche – darunter Ärzte, Krankenhausmanager und andere Fachkräfte im Gesundheitswesen, Qualitätskennzahlen der Krankenhäuser, Erfahrungsberichten von Patientinnen und Patienten sowie dem Einsatz von Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs).
